The “Serene Painting” is kind of cute! (I suppose I should have said “serene”.. but it has an ermine, so…)

The real Serene Painting

The “Serene Painting” is sometimes fake. To be honest, I kind of love both the real AND the fake version! The real one has a white ermine, while the fake one features a ferret!

The fake Serene Painting

And who doesn’t love a snugly little ferret?!

Well, Blathers is only interested in the ermine version, so make sure you only pick up the real one for him. Once you get it, it will be added to your growing collection of da Vinci works – along with the Academic Painting and the Famous Painting, and the description provided on the plaque will read:

Lady with an Ermine, Leonardo da Vinci, circa 1490

Oil on wood panel

One of only four portraits of women painted by da Vinci, one of which is the “Mona Lisa.” Some believe that the “ermine” is not actually an ermine, but rather a white ferret!

Some argue that the animal is a bit big to be an ermine, but hey artists like to take liberties!

The painting is one of four portraits the da Vinci painted (one of the others is the Mona Lisa!), and the woman is likely the mistress of his employer. There is a lot of symbolism around the ermine, which is likely why he painted it with such a large size.
