When it gets hot out, swimming is the best way to beat the hot. If you live in a hot climate like we do, then swimming is important all the time. The good folks at Nintendo also think this is a good idea, and in the summer of ’20 (AKA, the darkest timeline) they added an update to ACNH that allowed you to go swimming!

Wet suits

In order to get started with swimming, you are going to need a wet suit. The wet suit is the only required piece of gear you need to swim, although you can also get a snorkel or water shoes to go with it.

You can purchase a wet suit from Nook’s Cranny, and the first time you do, Timmy and Tommy will explain how swimming works.

When buying a wet suit from Nook’s Cranny, you’ll have one of four options available: black, blue, red, and yellow.

You can also purchase a wet suit from the ABD in Resident Services, or from the shopping app if you’ve unlocked it.

When purchasing a wet suit from the ABD or from the shopping app, you’ll find the leaf-print wet suit in four colors: yellow, blue, aqua and purple. You can also redeem miles to get the Nook Inc. wet suit!

All the colors of wet suits available!

Here you can see all of the wet suit options available, including the matching snorkels! (The snorkel that matches the Nook Inc. wet suit isn’t featured.) There are also water shoes, if you care to wear shoes when you go swimming.

You can put on the wet suit pretty much anytime you want, just put it into your inventory and when you click it, just select ‘wear’. It’s going to put it on over whatever you already have on. When you want to take it off, you’ll have to open your pocket, and select the clothing menu, and then choose to remove it. And make sure your pocket isn’t full, or you won’t be able to put it back into your inventory.

Now to take a moment and explain some of the more annoying things about using the wet suit.

Firstly, although it is a type of clothing, you can not set it as a wand outfit. Because it is a ‘swimming tool’. No problem, right? You’ll just set it to your tool ring! Except it’s clothing, so you can’t.

You can not set it to your wand. You can not set it to your tool ring. You have to take it off to edit your wand outfits. You have to take it off to enter the dressing room in Able Sisters.

The best solution I could find? I put the wet suit on, then I put a wand outfit on over the top. Then I remove the wand outfit when I am ready to go swimming. It is not perfect, but it is the fastest option I could come up with. If you have a better solution, we would love to hear it! I have raged about the wet suit issue for ages!

Now that you have your wet suit, you’re ready to go swimming! All you need to do is make sure you are wearing it, then head to the beach! You can enter the water at any beach, dock, or cliff that borders the water. That includes your airport! You could also build up a cliff along the beach if you want to make a diving area!

Walk up to the water and press ‘A’ to enter it. If you want to perform an adorable little flip, run to the water from a dock or cliff and press ‘A’ to jump!

Now that you’re IN the water, you’re ready to have fun!

You can move around slowly just with your joystick. If you want to swim a little faster, tap the ‘A’ button repeatedly.

If you see a stream of bubbles in the water, swim towards it! There are goodies in the water for you! When you are over the bubbles, press ‘Y’ to dive. Some of them will run from you – so you can chase after them to catch’em!
